How to post in a forum?

Edited

Who can post in a forum?

All registered users can post in forums. Some forums may be restricted and require users to have a specific Restriction Level to post. Banned users are restricted from posting.

Where are the forums?

All forums can be found on the “Forums” page. You can access a Universe’s forums page via the Side Navigation or page menu. Then, select “Forums” from the dropdown that appears.

Once on the “Forums” page, you’ll see a list of forums. Click on a forum to see sub-forums and threads.

How do I add a post to a thread?

To leave a post on a thread, scroll to the bottom of the thread. At the bottom of the thread, you will see a “Reply” button in the middle. (Your avatar icon and username will be to the left.)

Click on “Reply.” A text editor window will appear. Enter your thoughts about the discussion into the text editor. You can use the toolbar at the top of the text editor to format your text and add additional content, like images, video, and links. Once your reply is ready, click “Post.”

Note: Make sure your content doesn’t include insults or spam! This will most likely be detected and you won’t be able to post.

How do I quote a post in my reply?

You can also quote another user’s post in your reply. To quote a post, look on the right-hand side of the post. There will be a light grey icon that looks like an arrow with a quotation mark. This is the “Quote Reply” button. Click to bring up the text editor window. It will include a text box with the quoted post.

“Quote Reply” button highlighted in blue.

How can I delete a thread or a post?

You can always delete your own posts and threads. To start, go to the thread or post you want to delete. You can find threads and posts by browsing the forums, using the search bar at the top of the page, or by looking on your profile page. Your profile page has a tab labeled “Contents” where you can find posts and threads you’ve created.

Note: Admins, Devs, and Moderators can also delete other user’s posts and threads.

Once on the thread you want to delete, click on the “Delete” button above the first post. This is the trash can icon to the right of the thread’s title.

The “Delete” button in a thread’s toolbar is highlighted in dark blue.

To delete a post, click the hamburger (three lines) icon on the right-hand side of the post. This will open the post’s action menu. Click the trash can icon to delete the post.

The “Delete” button in a post’s action menu is highlighted in dark blue.

Once the thread or post is deleted, it will be labeled as deleted. This looks like bold text that reads “[Deleted]” on a thread. On a post, there will be a red banner.

How can I restore a thread or post that I deleted?

If you want to restore a thread or post that you’ve deleted, navigate back to the deleted thread or the thread that contains the deleted post.

A deleted thread will have a check icon to the right of the thread’s title. Click this icon to restore the thread. It will be visible again and users will be able to add posts. Users that are banned or do not have the required Restriction Level will still be unable to add to the thread.

The “Restore” button, a check icon, is highlighted in dark blue. It is to the left of a thread’s title.
Above the title, it is clear this thread has previously been deleted.

A deleted post will be shown as a red banner in a thread. Click the banner to see the post’s content and the “Restore” button.

A deleted post is shown in a thread as a red banner.

You can find the “Restore” button on the right-hand side of a deleted post. It is a check icon located in the same place where you previously found the “Delete” button.

The “Restore” button is highlighted in dark blue in the above post.

Click the “Restore” button to restore the post. It will again be visible in the thread!

How do I create a thread?

If you have something to share, you can create a new thread. First, navigate to the relevant forum or sub-forum and look for the “Create Thread” button in the upper right.

Note: Make sure to create your thread in the relevant forum or sub-forum. Otherwise, depending on the community guidelines, your thread may be moved or closed.

The “Create Thread” button is highlighted in dark blue.

Click on the “Create Thread” button. A text editor window will appear. Enter your title in the field labeled “Your title” at the top.

Note: Make sure your title gives other community members a clear idea of what you want to share or discuss!

Then, enter your thoughts or comments where it says “Add your content here…”. You can format your text using the options in the toolbar above the text box. The toolbar also has options for you to add additional content, like links, images, and video. You can learn more about the toolbar’s capabilities here.

The toolbar is highlighted in dark blue. The “Send” button is highlighted in light yellow.

Note: Keep in mind that forums are moderated. If your content includes insults or spam, it will most likely be flagged and you will be unable to create the thread.

Once you're happy with your content, hit the “Send” button below the text box. Your content will be the first post of a new thread!

How do I create a poll?

When you go to create a new thread, you can choose to add a poll. To create a poll, click the “Create A Poll” button above the text edit window on the right-hand side.

The “Create A Poll” button is highlighted in dark blue.

The text editor window will update to include options to create a poll. On the left-hand side, you can pose your question and add multiple choice options.

Start by writing your question in the text field labeled “Your title.” Your question will double as the title of the new thread.

The text fields for your title/poll question and response options are highlighted in dark blue. The two checkboxes with options for how users interact with the poll are highlighted in light yellow.

Then add possible responses to the poll in the text fields labeled “Poll choice 1,” “Poll choice 2,” and so on. Only add one response in each field. When you’ve entered all the possible responses, just leave the last text field blank.

Note: The “Your title” field will also search for similar questions, so you can see if your question has been asked before.

There are two checkboxes on the right-hand side. The first is the “Allow multiple choices” checkbox. Click this box if you want users to be able to vote on multiple options. Users will only be able to choose one response by default.

The second is the “Make poll results public?” checkbox. Click this box to let users view the results of the poll before the vote. Results will be hidden before voting by default.

Note: Results are always visible to users once they participate in the poll.

You can add comments or context to your poll using the text editor window at the bottom of the page. If you only want to post the poll, you can leave this section blank. Once the poll is ready, click the “Send” button beneath the text editor window. Your poll will be posted as a new thread!

In the poll pictured, the author has included a comment in the text editor window. The “Make poll results public?” checkbox was ticked, so users can hit the “View Results” button before voting.
